1. Always stretch before any strenuous exercise.
2. Sit in chairs with a good lumbar support.
3. Do not slouch when standing or sitting.
4. If you spend most of your time sitting pay close attention to your posture. An easy way to do this is by consciously sucking in your belly and rotating your pelvis slightly up. At the same time keep your head back with your ears over your shoulders and your shoulder blades pinched in. Do this every hour you are sitting, holding the muscles tight for several minutes.
5. Switch sitting positions often throughout the day. Periodically get up and walk around throughout the day and gently stretch.
6. Wear low heeled shoes. Women should refrain from wearing heels all the time.
7. Get enough Vitamin D from sun exposure daily. Vitamin D helps keep your bones, including your spine, strong.
8. Quit smoking if you currently smoke.
9. Smoking can reduce blood pressure to your lower spine, causing the spinal discs to degenerate.
10. Sleep on your side which helps reduce pressure on your spine.
11. Always lift with your legs and not with your back.
12. Maintain an optimal weight.
13. Drink plenty of water to enhance the height of the discs in your spine. Hydration will keep you fluid and reduce stiffness.
